The UAF Department of History and Arthur T. Fathauer Endowed Chair in History wish to acknowledge founding members Maida Buckley and Terrence Cole for their steadfast dedication to teaching and promoting history in the Fairbanks community.
Founder Maida Buckley
"To say that Maida Buckley has been a champion for civic education would be an understatement. During her twenty-five year career as a high school teacher, Buckley also worked with prospective social studies teachers in the teaching program at UAF, and served as coordinator of the Youth Vote, National History Day, and We the People programs. In an era of declining knowledge of our history and our country's founding documents, and amidst minute voter turnout, each of these programs serve to combat apathy and to promote the responsibilities that citizens must fulfill in order to maintain the health and well-being of their local community, state, and nation. Recently retired, Buckley leaves behind a legacy of civic commitment. All three programs that she ran continue under new leadership that she helped recruit to ensure the programs’ future success and longevity. Many former students, including numerous social studies teachers in Alaska, cite Buckley as a true inspiration." - on Buckley's Governor's Arts & Humanities Lifetime Achievement Award, 2019, for her impact and contributions made during her career of 25+ years as an educator in Fairbanks schools.

Founder Terrence Cole, Professor Emeritus of History

In the summer of 1970 Terrence Cole first came to Alaska as a 16-year-old, in an old Dodge pickup truck that groaned up the Alaska Highway from eastern Pennsylvania, when his older brother Patrick had decided to become a student at the University of Alaska. The Cole family had come north to Fairbanks to stay. Terrence was later joined by his identical twin brother Dermot Cole.
Terrence earned his undergraduate degree in Geography/Northern Studies (1976) and a Master’s Degree in History (1978) at the University of Alaska, followed by a Ph.D. in American History at the University of Washington in 1983. After half-a-dozen years as an editor and writer with Alaska Northwest Publishing Co., he returned to the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1988 as a professor of history.
For thirty years he was a professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he taught more than a dozen different courses about Alaska, the United States, and the world, to more than 14,000 students, and has won every major teaching award offered by the students and the faculty.
Professor Cole has written five books about Alaskan history, including Crooked Past, a history of the founding of Fairbanks, and Nome: City of the Golden Beaches, a history of the Nome gold rush. His latest book was a study of the Alaska statehood movement, Fighting for the 49th Star.
A frequent guest lecturer at public conferences and schools ranging from kindergarten classes to Elder Hostel and everything in between, he has appeared on the BBC, NPR, PBS (American Experience), the History Channel, TLC, the Weather Channel, the Discovery Channel, and ABC’s “Good Morning America.” To the present time he has not achieved his dream of appearing on an episode of “Cops” or “Keeping up with the Kardashians.”
Dr. Cole has been the recipient of numerous awards for his teaching and public service, including the Emil Usibelli Teaching Award from UAF, and the Edith Bullock Service Award from the University of Alaska Foundation. Twice he has been selected by the students at UAF as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year. In 2007 he received the Governor of Alaska’s Distinguished Service to the Humanities Award. In 2011 he was recognized with his twin brother Dermot Cole as the outstanding citizens of Fairbanks.

The Fairbanks History Day is a local affiliate of the Alaska History Day and National History Day competitions. National History Day, a non-profit organization, inspires students through exciting competition and tranforms teaching through project-based curriculum and instruction. These competitions, at the local, state and national level, make history come alive for America's youth by engaging them in the discovery of the historic cultural and social experiences of the past. Through hands-on experiences and presentations, today's youth are better able to inform the present and shape the future.
